BDS Sponsorship Supports Success of Climate Hack AI

04/01/2023

Last year, we were proud to reveal how BDS Sponsorship helped assemble a sponsorship offering in support of a competition hosted by Climate Hack. A highly timely initiative, the Climate Hack AI competition challenged students from 25 of the world’s best universities to identify ways of using AI to tackle carbon emissions.

Sponsored by the Global Innovation Hub, Ennovate, and Newcross Healthcare, the launch of the competition saw the organisers attract an incredible amount of interest in coverage. More specifically, Climate Hack announced this week that they had received over 130,000 page views, £50,000 in prizes, 383 participants from 4 countries, and had established themselves in the global climate and AI community.

Tasked with forecasting the next two hours of cloud coverage of the UK given the previous hour in EUMETSAT images using machine learning, a vital component of the larger pipeline to predict solar photovoltaic power production. No easy feat, this challenge has enabled Open Climate Fix to accomplish 2.8 times better than existing models that are used by the National Grid ESO. Such an improvement ultimately stands to save up to 100 kilo tons of carbon per year in the UK alone, which is certainly no bad thing!

Following the final, the Climate Hack AI organisers revealed how they were impressed with the submissions they received, and remain confident that the insights generated by the event will be used by organisations to further optimise climate efforts.

BDS Sets Its Sights on Screening for Schools

28/07/2022

Proud to be involved in a highly worthwhile initiative, BDS was delighted to create the sponsorship strategy for Screening for Schools (SfS). Helping to remove a significant barrier to learning, SfS provides an online screening system that can be used without any clerical training. This system ultimately allows schools to quickly identify any children who may suffer from poor vision.

The reason for identifying poor vision amongst students is considerable; it is estimated that around 15% of all school children suffer from poor vision that directly affects their ability to learn. Free to use, the software was developed at the Department of Optometry at the University of London and provides results within three minutes. Used by over 3,000 schools, the system produces personalised reports that outline steps towards overcoming the cause of impaired vision.

As a much-needed service with a clearly defined social purpose, BDS is excited to be working alongside SfS to identify sponsorship opportunities that will allow the organisation to receive funding from suitably aligned businesses and brands.

To find out more about the work that BDS does in collaboration with corporate, charitable, and educational organisations, simply get in touch today. Alternatively, feel free to contact our team to begin mapping out a sponsorship strategy for your business.

BDS Sponsorship and Climate Hack.ai

16/02/2022

The University College London’s Artificial Intelligence Society has invited students from 25 of the world’s best Universities to take part in a competition focused on using AI to make a tangible and measurable reduction in industrial carbon emissions.

Open Climate Fix, a climate-based non-profit organisation, has prepared around 100 gigabytes of data from the EUMETSAT system for the competition. The aim of the competition is to use Artificial Intelligence and machine learning to improve the accuracy of short-term solar photovoltaic nowcasting (predicting the amount of solar energy that will be produced in a given time period in real-time). With more accurate forecasting, electricity grid operators are able to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources. Open Climate Fix estimates that better solar photovoltaic forecasting could save up to 100 kilotonnes per year in the UK alone, and by 2030, reduce global carbon emissions by roughly 100 million tonnes.

This unique community is being organised by Jamie Weigold, President of the UCL Artificial Intelligence Society. In a press release announcing the launch of the Climate Hack.ai competition, Jamie Weigold said,

“Climate change is the single greatest threat to humanity today. How we, as a race, respond to it will define not only our generation but the survival and livelihood of all generations to come. Climate Hack.AI and the problem of increasing the quality of solar photovoltaic power production forecasts more generally, is one of many steps that will be required to tackle this threat. We are honoured to be hosting students from such a prestigious collection of universities whose student communities are participating in the competition, united together in the fight against climate change.

Jack Kelly (Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Open Climate Fix) said,
“OpenClimate Fix is committed to addressing climate change in a completely open fashion in order to accelerate impact. Open Climate Fix uses our connection to industry to present real-world problems with researchers. Climate Hack.AI is a fantastic opportunity to get some smart, inventive people on this important challenge, and we can in turn help take these innovations to practical use.”

Here at BDS we assisted the Climate Hack organisers by helping them put together a sponsorship offering to support the competition. The competition is sponsored by Global Innovation Hub, Ennovate, and Newcross Healthcare.

Set to be held in 2022, BDS is excited to work alongside Riverside Studios in Hammersmith as they launch a brand new digital arts festival. Responsible for creating an effective sponsorship strategy for the event, BDS has enabled the organisation to acquire the funding necessary to achieve its goal of making the arts as accessible as possible. A former Victorian iron works, Riverside Studios was converted into a film studio in 1933 and went on to become the birthplace of many classic British shows like Hancock’s Half Hour and Doctor Who. Transformed into a dedicated community arts centre in 1978, Riverside has since earned a reputation as one of the capital’s leading hubs for creative performances, hosting everything from theatre to dance productions, as well as comedy and music from some of the world’s most recognised performers.

Working towards a series of charitable aims, Riverside Studios commits to:

  1. Maximising the accessibility of the arts in the local community
  2. Providing a broad range of entertaining programmes that entertain and educate the diverse demographic of their community
  3. Collaborating with schools and charities to promote the importance of the arts
  4. Harnessing the capabilities of digital technologies to increase the accessibility of the arts
  5. Promoting wellbeing through the arts

Guided by these five key principles, and with new state of the art facilities to welcome guests to, the upcoming digital arts festival promises to be an exceptional event that further increases the work that Riverside Studios carries out.
