UCLH

BDS have been appointed by University College London Hospital (UCLH) to develop corporate partnerships with their new, leading-edge hospital which will bring together two world-class and long-standing specialist centres of excellence in Oral and ENT health care, education and research.

The state-of-the-art building will open in Central London this autumn, combining the Eastman Dental Hospital and The Royal National Ear Nose and Throat Hospital for the care of more than 200,000 outpatients per year, including 85,000 for dental treatment, across nine floors. The building has been co-designed with patients and staff to deliver the needs of patients and to provide a platform for staff to deliver excellent and innovative clinical care in a modern world class environment with pioneering use of new digital technologies, incorporating two floors solely for dental treatment and with an additional whole floor dedicated entirely to the treatment of children and young people.

The rich heritage of the Eastman Dental Hospital dates back to 1926 when George Eastman donated £200,000 (plus another £100,000 from two other principal benefactors) for the establishment of a specialist dental and oral health clinic for the benefit of poor children in Central London. Later it was established as the postgraduate dental institute; with a lasting legacy as it is now the largest provider of postgraduate dentistry teaching and training in Europe.

Together with its partner the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, the hospital has a strong emphasis on research and has invested heavily in its Oral Health Education Centre, and is part of both the UCLH/UCL Biomedical Research Centre and the UCL Partners Academic Health Science Centre. In 2016, bibliometric analysis commissioned by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and carried out by RAND showed that UCL researchers are the most highly cited in England for Biomedical and Health Research.
